Chimney Crown Repair

The chimney crown is the concrete or mortar slab that covers the top of the chimney structure, sealing the gap between the flue tile and the outer edge of the chimney stack. It is the first line of defense against rain, snow, and ice, and when it fails — through cracking, spalling, or complete deterioration — water begins working its way into the masonry below. A properly constructed chimney crown should overhang the chimney face on all sides to direct water away from the masonry, slope away from the flue collar to shed water, and be formed from a durable refractory or hydraulic cement — not standard mortar, which is too porous and weak for the exposure conditions at the top of a chimney. Many Charlotte homes, particularly those built in the 1970s through 1990s, have flat mortar crowns that are already showing significant deterioration.
